From time to time you may find duplicates within your database and want to merge them - without losing any data. 
Firstly - you can only merge two records of the same entity, for example 2 contacts can be merged, but not a contact and a lead. 
 
Select two records that are duplicates 
Nominate one record as the master record 
Where appropriate selectively copy data from fields within the duplicate record into fields in the “Master” record. 
When the task is committed any linked records from other entities (Activities, Notes and Opportunities) are unlinked from the “Duplicate” record and linked to the “Master” record. 
The duplicate record is then updated to have a status of inactive.
